Local Priorities Anti Social Behaviour Concern Weekly Update

I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Anti Social Behaviour, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey.

Police have been hard at work tackling problems in Stevenage Town Centre reported by members of the public.

Further Hotspot patrols have been conducted in the town, ensuring that more Police officers are in the area to deter those from committing crime. We continue to see the successes procured from Hotspot patrols and these will continue.

A moped was seized for driving without insurance and driving on a pedestrianised pathway. The rider was given a ticket for the relevant offences.

Another driver of a moped was reported for driving in a pedestrianised zone as well as driving through a no entry/one way zone. A ticket was given to the driver at scene.

We have had reports from the public about people begging in town. Police have been quick to intervene and have moved on those who have been committing offences under the vagrancy act.

Knife checks have been conducted in town to make sure that stores have been adhering to their policies such as Challenge 25, keeping refusal books etc. We are happy to report that all stores that sell knives have remained vigilant in the selling/purchasing of knives.

An officer was struck by a pedal cycle in town this week whilst conducting their local patrols. The suspect was quickly arrested and dealt with at scene as well as being reported for several offences.

X2 illegally modified pedal bikes were seized by Police for no insurance in town as well as one for no licence. The bikes have been taken from the suspects and they have been reported at scene.

Response officers have attended Tesco, whereby a male was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage. The suspect was taken to custody.

We will continue to provide weekly updates as a part of the Safer Town Centre Initiative and would like to receive feedback regarding how we can continue to keep the town centre a safe place to visit.

Tackling antisocial behaviour can be a complex issue, and one which requires input and action from more than just the police.

The Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 aims to put victims first, giving power to local people and enabling professionals to find the best solutions for their local area.

The act provides the police, local authorities and other local agencies with flexible tools and powers that they can use to respond quickly and effectively to antisocial behaviour.

These include:

  • civil injunctions.
  • criminal behaviour orders.
  • public spaces protection orders.
  • community protection notices.
  • dispersal powers.
  • closure powers.

The act also includes measures such as the Community Remedy and antisocial behaviour case reviews which empower victims and communities to have a say in the outcome of their reports and hold agencies to account.

If you ever experience this issue or have information regarding an incident, please report it using our online reporting tools at https://www.herts.police.uk, speak to an operator in our Force Communications Room via our online web chat or call the non-emergency number 101.

Alternatively, you can stay 100 per cent anonymous by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via their untraceable online form at crimestoppers-uk.org.
